Gem City Catfé is looking for a specialty coffee expert for our Coffee & Bar Manager! They are responsible for managing all aspects of the coffee, food, and alcohol aspects. This position ensures that the café side is running smoothly, meets all health and safety standards, helps brainstorm new creative ideas, oversees and orders inventory, maintains beverage quality control, ensures recipe and process consistency among all team members, and trains and on-boards new team members in the café area. As a key-holder, opening shifts are required. Coffee knowledge is required but no prior animal welfare experience is necessary!

SCHEDULE + COMPENSATION

Full-time position, requiring 32+ hours per week. This position has Friday and Saturday off typically but may vary based on holidays or if other team members are on vacation. Must be available on Sunday morning, as well as some holidays. Gem City Catfe is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day but has live animals on site always, which need care. Position is ready to be filled around August 1, with flexibility on start date. Training will overlap with our current Coffee & Bar Manager to ensure a smooth transition. Compensation averages $14/hour with tips.

At least 21 years of age and high school diploma or GED required, as well as 2 years of experience in customer service. Must have experience and knowledge of the specialty coffee industry. Must have a deep concern for the humane treatment and compassionate care of animals but prior animal care or adoption experience are not required.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists General Manager in managing a profitable store, reviewing controllable expenses, and monitoring labor costs.

  • Ensures that all safety procedures are being followed at all times to provide a safe environment for both cats and customers.

  • Ensures that the store has sufficient café product, merchandise, and supplies needed to manage an efficient store.

  • Maintains and orders all inventory for food, beverage, and alcohol services.

  • Opens or closes the store according to procedures, including setting alarms and ensuring all doors and windows are closed and locked.

  • Delegates duties, as necessary, to other team members.

  • Performs financial documentation and register readings during shift, including tip distribution and reporting. Prepares and makes bank deposits.

  • Ensures that the store, backroom, and equipment are maintained in a safe, organized, and clean manner.

  • Assists General Manager in conducting pre-employment interviews designed to minimize team member turnover and to ensure proper staffing levels are maintained.

  • Assists the General Manager in maintaining proper loss prevention standards, reviewing cash handling procedures, deposits and safe procedures.

  • Responds to any and all emergencies while on shift by directing or performing steps necessary to ensure medical treatment and/or escape routes are available.

  • Informs the General Manager of any operational inconsistencies, employee incidents, accidents, potential safety hazards, or any unusual or pertinent events.

  • Reports employee accidents and potential safety hazards to the General Manager; completes appropriate paperwork, and recommends a proper course of action.

SERVICE

  • Provide helpful and educational guidance to potential adopters in a friendly, positive manner while promoting responsible pet ownership.

  • Provide behavior and health information about each individual adoption candidate.

  • Process adoptions and maintain all adoption records and paperwork in orderly fashion.


  • Possesses extensive knowledge of the specialty coffee industry and stays current as things change

  • Educates all team members on our products and services, by developing an understanding of various types of coffee, tea products, blends and roasts available through our vendors.

  • Consistently maintains the highest quality product standards.

  • Creates drink recipes and menus. Rotates and adjusts products when applicable.

  • Creates seasonal specials with unique drink recipes and products.

  • Oversees drink making and participates in continuing education.

  • Ensures that all team members prepare drinks according to Company drink recipe standard operating procedures and maintains quality control through periodic taste tests.

  • Picks up product and supplies as needed for items that are not available for delivery.

  • Ensures all alcohol company policies are followed by team members so that alcohol is never served to minors and all legal precautions are taken.

  • Assists in creating and maintaining a positive workplace with high staff job satisfaction.

  • Contributes information to the General Manager on performance appraisals for team members.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Exceptional knowledge of coffee on many levels, from sourcing to serving.

  • Must be highly organized and able to use consistent systems to maintain order.

  • Exceptional work ethic with excellent interpersonal and planning skills. Ability to exercise independent judgment as appropriate and to work independently with little direct supervision.

  • Manages time efficiently and prioritizes work extremely well. Able to meet deadlines with high quality work.

  • Demonstrates exemplary communication skills to include skill in writing and editing and ability to express thought orally in a clear manner. Will be required to communicate effectively with the public, business owners, Gem City Catfé staff, and vendors. Must be able to work with various personalities, ethnicities, social and age groups, and maintain tact and professionalism at all times.

  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.

  • Must have reliable transportation to pick up supplies and products as needed.

  • Requires ability to lift and stock items up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be comfortable with all breeds, sizes, and temperaments of on-site cats.

  • Must be willing to assist with handling and restraint of on-site cats if necessary.
